ITT has awarded its prestigious Bella Rangal Callan Award for the Student of the Year 2010 to Kristen Acker. Kristen has recently completed Level 2 BTEC Travel and Tourism at Burnley College, finishing with a Distinction (Star) six weeks early.
Presented at the ITT Summer Cocktails on 22 July, the award acknowledges outstanding achievement throughout an educational career.
Following a difficult period at school which saw bereavement affecting her school grades and behaviour, Kristen enrolled at Burnley College determined to turn her life around and pursue her dream of working in the travel industry.
Melanie Crossley, Programme Leader of Travel and Tourism at Burnley College said: “Kristen enrolled on our Level 1 course for 2008/9 and passed with flying colours. She was then accepted onto our Level 2 programme for 2009/10. Kristen has been an outstanding student this year. I really believe she deserves credit for turning her life around.”
Kristen was the college’s first Cruise Expert – a status awarded by the Association of Cruise Experts (ACE). She will progress on to Level 3 BTEC this year with her final goal being to earn a place at University. She is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when you put your mind to it!
ITT created the Centres of Excellence status to recognise leading universities keen on working particularly closely with the Institute.
Universities with Centre of Excellence status will be able to use a dedicated logo, receive support in organising industrial placements, have access to high level industry speakers, have access to senior industry figures for research purposes and will grant an annual ITT Centre of Excellence Student of the Year award to a student identified by the university.
