Steve Endacott, Chief Executive, On Holiday Group
Controversial as ever, Steve Endacott gave a fascinating speech on his view of the current state of the travel industry. He no longer sees a role for the traditional retail agent - he thinks the future for smaller businesses will be in providing travel and holidays to a niche market. And they won’t be doing it from high street shops either - rather, they’ll either be web-based or operate as home workers.
He recounted his various jobs in the industry, explaining why he believes that Airtours’ founder David Crossland was the best entrepreneur the travel industry has ever seen or is ever likely to see. Crossland surrounded himself with a fantastic team and his other protégés included Peter Rothwell, Chris Mottershead, Richard Carrick and Will Waggot – all now hugely influential themselves.
